How would you cope if your income stopped?

Did you know...?

(1) The minimum state benefit (in 2005), if you are unable to work, is just @148.80 per week.

(2) Most people think they are covered in their existing employment if they stop earning an income due to illness, accident or disability,

...but the fact is most are not.

Ask your employer about your situation. You never think it will happen to you... ...and most probably it won’t...but why take that chance??

Are you covered?

Most people assume they are covered by their employer or by the Department of Social Welfare if they were unable to work for any period of time.

However the facts are:

  1. Most employers do not have specific policies to guarantee employees incomes if they become incapacitated.
  2. Many people find that the most they can look forward to is an unspecified sum decided at a future date by the management or the trustees of their organisation.
  3. Social welfare payments are not enough to cover even the basics of life. Payments vary but (in 2005) are from €148.80 per week depending on whether or not you have dependants.
  4. If you are self-employed you are entitled to NO social welfare payments.

How would you pay for the basics in life?
What can you afford to do without?
What changes are you going to have to make?
What essential cut backs will you make?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could guarantee your way of life no matter what the future had in store?
